After I finally got around to seeing Gurren Lagann, my overall feeling was that Gainax, the anime studio that created it, was trying to outdo every super robot anime that preceded Gurren Lagann. It’s a kitchen sink anime in the greatest sense, and it had enough heart, funding, and mainstream appeal that it was a massive hit.
I got it, I just didn’t love it. Which has been my experience with most of the Gainax anime series I’ve seen, except for Blazing Transfer Student, which I did love.
Anyway, their latest series further cements my view that Gainax overcompensates for its weaknesses by finding a hook to try and set themselves apart. You know that moe stuff, right? If you found it odd that adult otaku enjoy the immature misadventures of middle school girls…
Behold: Hanamaru Kindergarten. One of the students has a crush on her teacher. (Are kids this young even psychologically capable of that?)
Way to out-moe the competition, Gainax. I don’t think I’ll be able to suffer through this, but I imagine it will be like Gurren Lagann: enjoyable for its fan base, but not particularly inventive except for the most superficial of ways.
