Every Tuesday I’ll be regaling you with an uncompressed screenshot of something awesome or inspiring from my DVD collection. This week we have the following anatomy lesson from the 1986 Fist of the North Star.

Discotek recently released a second printing of the film which contains improved subtitles. The company took some flak for their original release which, despite having an awesome remastered transfer, included numerous subtitle errors like the one where Jagi incorrectly referred to Raoh as “master.”

It’s amazing how much detail was crammed into this quick half-second scene in the movie, where we see a thug’s brain shortly before Kenshiro’s technique causes it to spontaneously explode. Honestly, if you blink you might miss this shot entirely. And yet, the amount of work it must have taken is astounding. Fist of the North Star is more a collection of vignettes than a coherent dramatic narrative, but it’s the animation quality of every second of it that makes this movie required viewing.
