I’ve come to realize that when you name your website Blog of the North Star, some people take it to mean you style yourself an expert or authority figure. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m just a fan, perhaps disagreeable to a fault, but just a fan all the same. In addition to being a total blast, watching this box set was a lesson in many ways. We live in a fast-paced disposable world, where the greatest amount of emphasis is always placed on what’s coming next. I bet more blog posts will have been written about the new Batman movie in the 12 months before it comes out than the 12 months afterward, for example.

It’s easy to get lost in The Frenzy of Now, and the Internet in general. In following the minutia of Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage, Fist of the Blue Sky, Legends of the Dark King, The Legends of the True Savior, and even the remastered re-release of the 1986 Fist of the North Star movie, I lost sight of one fact, central to my existence as an anime fan.

The original Fist of the North Star anime kicks all kinds of ass.

Not only does it portray the final battle between Kenshiro and Raoh better than any medium short of the original manga itself, but it honors ALL of the supporting characters which make up this vastly entertaining universe dreamt up by a holy triumvirate of badasses: Tetsuo Hara, Buronson, and Nobuhiko Horie. I have to offer up my eternal gratitude to those three men, the recently departed Toyoo Ashida, and every other artist who is a part of this thing.

So yes, this site is named Blog of the North Star. It’s named as such for my own sake, to remind me the path I follow as a “blogger” is guided by that blazing light more than anything else. This box set served as a euphoric instruction in that fact.
