Neat piece, man. I won't admit that I have a large "backlog" of anime to watch, but I rarely think of it as a backlog... I'm only 25, so I feel that I have plenty of time in my life to get to something in that "backlog". Once you feel that you "have to watch" something for a reason other than your own enjoyment, entertainment, or curiosity then you start to not enjoy something as much. That's why I usually don't give a damn about what's popular right now or whatever; if it interests me then I'll watch it when I want to watch it. I don't care if it's not being talked about anymore, since I'm watching it for myself.

As for Gundam, my friend has seen every Gundam TV series out there, but it was for his own enjoyment and curiosity; he wanted to know how each series was for his own personal knowledge. As for me, I've started a few Gundams but only fully watched a couple, but that's fine with me.

While I want to argue about the Gundam thing, I can't b/c it's true. Even though I don't really talk to other Gundam fans, I feel, as a Gundam fan, to watch every show to be apart of the "club".

I understand. Gundam fans can be... opinionated about their show. It isn't just in Gundam fandom, it's also in the Mecha genre as a whole. When someone goes on /m or a forum and asks if "I liked Gurren Laggan, Gundam 00, whatever, what should I watch next" they are given a list of 70s and 80s shows with a comment like "watch these and then come back".

It's very off putting and pushs people away from mecha. They don't look at the show they person that original likes, they just say watch the foundational shows and, once you watch these 10-15 shows, you can come back and be apart of mecha.

[...] The question is: why do people eat sour grapes in the first place? I’m no psychology expert, but I’ve had plenty of conversations with anime fans. Here are some possible explanations, peppered with images from a great anime about self-rationalization: Paranoia Agent! [...]

"I think Rutger Hauer starred in a string of low-budget action movies in the nineties because he was having a midlife crisis" Well I almost pissed my pants with that line. You should be proud. Anyway interesting post. This movie seems really weird.

Yah that movie was beyond terrible, words can't describe how awful the movie was. They made Kenshiro pretty much a God of War into the Champion of Sissies. They made them look as if they were regular fighters in real life.

Well, this is pretty late in the game, but you need to see this. It really can't be classified. All I can say without giving myself brain damage is that it is appropriate for the topics discussed in this post. And that it might just change your life forever.

I have the entire run of Raijin Comics. That magazine was way ahead of it's time. I can't help but imagine it would thrive digitally as an app for phones and tablets. It had so much good stuff.

I would love to buy Baki and Tough manga. I have their anime counterparts. Funimation needs to remaster and re-release Baki and while we're on the subject of competitive fighting manga, Hajime no Ippo needs a license rescue.

With UFC as popular as it is, those three series would do a lot better today than they did years ago. They just have to be marketed to that crowd instead of traditional U.S. anime fans. (That is why sports anime and manga fails.)

That's only because videogame budgets are too high. High budgets stifle creativity and push prices up. I'd rather pay $30 for something that imaginative and fun, than $60 for something derivative and marketing-led.
I wouldn't shed a single tear for the lost profits of the makers of boring "Triple-A" blockbuster crap.

I'm at a point in life where it makes me feel like a fool to buy brand new video games. The same way I'd feel like a fool if I bought a car brand new and it lost half its value as soon as I got out of the lot. I'd like the market to change in such a way that I don't have to feel cheated in order to be a day 1 consumer. And it's getting there, with rental options like OnLive being available for some games the day they come out. Until then, I'll get more value for my $60 elsewhere.
